Why does my HP 3030 laserjet print all black pages?

I changed the toner cartridge for a brand new one, but still the same.

  1. Replacing the toner cartridge was a good first step, as that can cause that problem. Too bad it didn’t work.

There are basically two other main things that can be causing that, that I’ve actually seen on printers before, with a possible third.

    1) The laser scanner exit window is blocked. There is usually a shutter that covers the laser scanner unit exit window that blocks the laser from accidentally being allowed to exit without the toner cartridge in place. There is a mechanism that moves the shutter out of the way when the cartridge is installed or when the cover is closed. I don’t know which method this printer uses without looking at it. Possibly, somehow the shutter is not opening and allowing the laser to hit the toner cartridge. You’d have to check the mechanism for operation. The laser is used to discharge the white areas of print on the drum, and if it doesn’t hit the drum, the full charge is left and prints black. (Some toner cartridges actually have a shark-like fin on them to open the shutter, and if they break off….)

    2) The other possibility is the electrical ground contact on the printer is not making proper contact with the toner/drum cartridge ground contact. The ground allows the high voltage drum charge to bleed off when the laser hits the drum to create the white print areas. This is something that is very hard to determine without taking the printer partially apart to view the actual contact to see if it’s working properly or not. Most techs won’t know what to look for. I’ve taught several how and what to look for on some specific printers, but I don’t know what this one looks like without looking at it myself at least once.

    3) The possible third cause would be a bad high voltage power supply, but I don’t think that this is it, but still a possibility.

If the printer is still under warranty, call HP and have a tech come out and fix it, or replace it, before the warranty expires, otherwise you’ll have to try to get it fixed by a hopefully trained & certified HP tech out of warranty.

    Best of luck.
