Part of a long history of early HP laser printers that introduced the world to multiple innovative features such as HP’s Instant On fuser, which reduced warm up time to zero, the HP LaserJet 6P models were state of the art in their day. Designed as an affordable solution for small businesses with light printing demands, the 6P had minimal power, but came at a bargain price.
Operating at a print speed of only 8 pages per minute, the HP LaserJet 6P is no industry leader in that department. In fact, all of its features across the board are either dated, or were limited to begin with, save one. The device’s print resolution enhancement is impressive, even by today’s standards.
Though the HP LaserJet 6P maxes out at only 600 x 600 dots per inch in resolution, HP’s REt resolution enhancement technology does an excellent job adjusting the size and placement of each individual pixel on the page in order to smooth angles, curves, and edges, and give the appearance of a higher quality setting. Though resolution enhancement, when switched on, may ultimately slow down print speeds to some degree, it can add a much more professional feel to workloads, even if they are strictly text only.
Also assisting in overall look and quality of imagery and text is Microfine toner that is provided in HP print cartridges. HP claims that this superior toner helps with print accuracy and the effectiveness of quality enhancement. Whether this is true, or merely an incentive to buy HP toner is difficult to determine.
Though, upon its release, the HP LaserJet 6P did come with three different boxed upgraded models on top of the base unit, but only one of them, the HP LaserJet 6PMP actually seemed to have any actual hardware improvements. For example, the HP LaserJet 6Pse model had the exact same hardware specifications as the 6P, and came with copies of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Publisher. Similarly, the HP LaserJet 6Pxi edition came boxed with a copy of Netscape 3.0, which was free anyway, and AT&T WorldNet, but only a trial edition.
Only the HP LaserJet 6PMP variation was actually any different from the base model, in the fashion of having an upgraded on board random access memory of 3 MBs, over the 6P’s 2 MBs. Paper handling, like the unit’s RAM, was also very limited. The standard paper tray held only 250 sheets of letter or legal sized documents. Interestingly, some of the additional paper trays available could accept letter sized paper, but were not compatible with legal sized.
Probably the most impressive feature about the HP LaserJet 6P is its 100 sheet multi purpose tray. It would be uncommon to see a multifunctional tray so large on a unit of this caliber manufactured today, and, though it could only hold ten envelopes, other special media types such as transparencies and card stock worked quite well with the unit, making it seem that maybe the HP LaserJet 6P wasn’t all bad.
