Moto Q9h

Company phone it seems… chaining me to my Outlook email. At least I’m allowed to make personal calls! And, maybe even flickr from the phone :)

First impressions in the box are good. It looks quite ok despite having a large ugly keyboard. It is definitely a Motorola. It comes with a charging dock with a spare charging slot for a second battery. Is that a hint to it’s short standby time, so typical of WM devices? Still, it reminded me of my first mobile phone, a Motorola MicroTAC I-888 that we got for from Crazy John, who sadly passed away yesterday.

I turn it on to be greeted by Windows Mobile 6, and it’s all downhill from there!

Then I read Gizmodo’s mini Moto Q9m review…
I just got my hands on the first Moto Q9m, and after a couple of hours, I’m ready to send it right back. Seriously, if you buy this phone, you are dumb.
… and I agree. Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone Edition sucks! At least I get a 512MB microSD with it. Full specs below.

My 25 Most Influencial Games
all in one printing

I’ve been doing a lot of research on my past gaming experiences in relation to a series of blog articles I’ve been writing lately.

Today I decided that it would be a good idea to gather all of the games that have influenced me the most and print them out as a poster for my office wall.

After printing it out I took it around and questioned some of my work mates on their gaming history; no one got all of them, can you?

Comments go here or in the entry on Binary Bonsai Also available at a slightly larger resolution.

This is my most consistent Phrag. Check the large size for the little hairs.

This is one of the best of my newer, higher resolution photos. Once I have enough high quality pics, I think I’ll print a book of them. Let me know if you want to get in on buying one when I have it printed.

Day 43 – 16 Things
all in one printing

I decided to add 16 older self portraits to this one. All but two are from my first attempt at 365 days, one is a reworking of a 365 shot and another is from a DILO day.

The central image, which I took today, is here.

I was tagged by Leo Reynolds and late night movie

16 Things

1. I am fiercely loyal to my friends and family so don’t even question it.

2. I will not eat low-fat products that have had the goodness sucked out of them. I would rather go without.

3. I will talk to (almost) anyone about (almost) anything.

4. I am chaotically well organised and meticulously disorganised.

5. I would be devastated if I could not go to Glastonbury – I need it to recharge.

6. I am very intolerant of basic errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling on printed matter – someone has asked for it, someone has drafted it and someone has printed it – surely one of them should know if it’s wrong? It goes right through me like nails down a blackboard.

7. I have always wished I could have been a dancer. Unfortunately I got piano lessons instead.

8. I haven’t smoked for 10 weeks, having smoked for 26 years (with a 2 year stoppage about 6 years ago). I miss it intensely.

9. I can’t bear the feel of sand.

10. I love with all my heart and cry with all my soul.

11. I have been vegetarian for 17 years. I don’t think it is wrong to eat animals and don’t have a problem with other people doing it. I don’t preach about my reasons and don’t understand why people sometimes react as if I have done. Some people try to question me to find out where I’m going wrong with what they think vegetarians should also be doing. I don’t beat myself up about not doing it all – I wonder why anyone thinks I should.

12. ‘Not a morning person’ doesn’t even begin to cover it.

13. I enjoy being breathtakingly rude to aggressive and ignorant customers (retail) in such a way that my colleagues are entertained and the customer is unaware.

14. ‘Seasons in the Sun’ by Terry Jacks always makes me cry and I don’t even know why. That is the embarrassing confession one out of the way!

15. If I could be a student for the rest of my life, I would be.

16. In any office working environment I have always wangled my way into being in charge of the stationery cupboard.

1. Colour Me Grey, 2. Lazy Sunday Afternoon, 3. Silhouette, 4. The Day I Met Ms SS, 5. New Hair (Again), 6. Warm on the Inside, 10. Lovely Lazy Sunday, 11. Mascara, 15. An Eye for Rust, 16. I’m Watching, 20. Pretending it’s Summer, 21. Kinks, not curls!, 22. Tragedy and Comedy, 23. Hallowe’en, 24. St David’s Day, 25. Backlit

Mementos and Masterpieces

Photographic responses to public sculpture and monuments in Norfolk and Norwich

Thursday 13 September – Monday 1 October 2007 : 10am-7pm Free

An exhibition by local photographers, amateur and professional, who have tried to capture in two dimensions the interesting aspects of the familiar three dimensional forms around us.

==========================================

It’s easy to take our region’s public sculptures and monuments for granted, not really noticing the wide variety and detail of the works of art that we pass as we go out and about. ‘Mementos and Masterpieces’ is an exhibition that has provided the opportunity to look closer, through the lens, at these masterpieces.

The results are creative responses by local photographers, amateur and professional, who have tried to capture in two dimensions the interesting aspects of the familiar three dimensional forms around us. As well as the more well-known, and controversial, pieces such as the Hay Hill sculptures, the artists have gone out of their way to track down more obscure works, or to look at familiar art in a new light.

Sometimes it is to do with the way the photograph was taken, the way it was manipulated afterwards (processing or digital) or the way the sculpture is shown relating to its surroundings and the people passing by. With each approach that has been used, it is a chance to take a new look at the historic and contemporary artworks that we can enjoy everyday.

One of the exhibitors, local artist Leo Reynolds, explains his involvement: “I’m highly delighted to have had photographs chosen for the Mementos and Masterpieces exhibition. The photographs took a long journey to get there. I photograph anything and everything. The results are uploaded and arranged in sets on a website based in San Francisco called Flickr (www.flickr.com). Anyone in the world can view and search the photographs so it provides me with a global photo album. Staff at the Norwich Arts Centre found my Norwich sets and left an announcement for the exhibition in the comments section. I responded by e-mail. The NAC technician was then able to choose and download the full size files from the US servers for printing and framing. For a local exhibition some of the photographs have travelled thousands of miles!”

The Exhibition was supported by the Recording Archive for Public Sculpture in Norfolk and Suffolk. The archive is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and administered by the University of East Anglia and the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association.

THE GRACEFUL CURVES AND FLOWING FORM OF A YOUNG JAPANESE MAIKO IN KIMONO, DRAPING HER SLEEK PERFECTION OF LOVELINESS OVER A RAILING BY THE KAMO RIVER AS GOLDFISH SWIM AROUND HER OBI
all in one printing

Please excuse the short title of this photo…it was three times longer before I edited it down!

ENLARGED PHOTO : www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/3553336430/sizes/o/

SEE COMMENTS # 2, #3, and #4 below.

Although she is a Maiko, she already has the more serious poise and demeanor of a Geisha. Other photos of Maiko usually seem to portray a more youthful (sometimes even childish) and "giddy" demeanor such as seen here :

www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/2821967561/in/set-7215…

www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/3285796715/in/set-7215…

www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/3286612530/in/set-7215…

Flickr member Noel43 tells us in one of the comments below, "…..Her name is Michiko. She was born in 1916 as a daughter of a Geisha, and became Maiko at age of 13. In chapter VII [of Liza Dalby's book GEISHA] there is short bio of Michiko and her two friends. It seems they were quite popular at the time and were even called ‘great trio of Pontocho’…….."

Here you can see TWO MORE Maiko images taken from one of these same Kamo River verandas, though not the exact spot as above. They are in the SHOW ME THE OBI ! set :

www.flickr.com/search/?w=24443965@N08&q=Photo+Spot+Ka…

TO ALL MAIKO AND KIMONO EXPERTS HERE ON FLICKr !!!!

PLEASE TELL THOSE OF US WHO DO NOT KNOW (Like me, Okinawa Soba), EXACTLY HOW AND WHY THIS RATHER MATURE-LOOKING GIRL IS A MAIKO (IF SHE IS), AND HOW WE CAN KNOW JUST BY LOOKING THAT THIS IS A MAIKO’S KIMONO, and NOT THAT OF A GEISHA OR OTHER MATURE WOMAN.

Thanks in advance for your comments on this, because no matter how many times she is being called a MAIKO here, her over-all "look" seems way more "mature".

IMMORTAL GEISHA — WHERE ARE YOU !!!?

Although identified as a Maiko (and from the neck up, her ornamentation seems like a Maiko), from the neck down, her particular sleek dress and demeanor come across as nothing like the usual as-yet-still-a-child Maiko images on my photostream. Rather, she comes across as a very mature young lady, already into her Geisha years !

To my eyes, this is the most captivating match of a kimono to a body that I’ve ever seen — how a woman and her kimono were meant compliment each other.

When worn correctly, the perfectly designed Kimono is more stunning than any Western "Evening Gown" could ever be.

Hollywood movie stars on the red carpet at the Oscars are boring compare to this !

KIMONO NOTE : It continues to be a point of great frustration over the years to look at literally thousands of the most beautiful and exquisite Kimono patterns and designs in all of the old photographs — while knowing next to nothing about the great artists and embroiderers who transformed the white bolts of silk in to some of the most expensive textile creations in the world.

Okinawa_Soba has about 130 original ISE KATAGAMI kimono stencils from the EDO and MEIJI eras. Cut with fantastic precision into specially prepared sheets of "Mulberry Paper", they are themselves a wonder to behold. Occasionally they are found "signed" with the makers stamp [han], yet none of mine are, the artists seeing them only as an interim means to an end.

A Collection of about 50 examples (not mine) ise-katagami-ma.blogspot.com/

*******************************************

From an original 1920s-30s gelatin silver print. Photographer unknown.

According to the comments below, we should be able to date this almost to the exact year. One of us here will get to that soon enough, I’m sure !

By the way, the river flowing behind her is described here : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamo_River
