HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf ? Non Expandable, Moderate Level MFC

This new four function MFC from HP, the LaserJet Pro M1212nf, is small enough in both footprint and price to be considered for personal use, but is also networkable, and easily powerful enough to be considered for a small office. Its moderately high print resolution makes it a great device to consider for printing black and white imagery, but, unfortunately, copy resolution does not match the unit’s print quality.

A resolution of only 600 x 400 dots per inch for copies makes the HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf not ideal for high resolution reproductions. Though best quality print mode runs, technically, only slightly higher, it has a 1200 dpi effective mode for great quality imagery. As usual, scan resolution runs much higher at a full 1200 x 1200 dots per inch for optical scanning, and an enhanced mode up to 19,200 dots per inch.

The HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf comes equipped with not only a flatbed top that is useful for copying and scanning three dimensional items such as books or magazines, it also carries an automatic document feeder that is useful when scanning multiple sheets of standard thickness paper, which can be an invaluable time saver for workloads requiring copies of large document sets. The ADF is even compatible with full, 8.5 x 14 inch letter sized paper.

A built in fax modem allows faxing at speeds of up to 33.6 Kbps, which translates to about 3 seconds per page for legal sized documents. A respectable fax resolution of 300 x 300 dots per inch is also helpful, along with a sizable laundry list of fax features including fax memory of up to 500 pages, auto fax reduction, auto redialing, fax delayed sending, and many, many more.

The HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf does not include a telephone handset for standard phone calls, but it does support PC interfacing, remote retrieval, fax polling, a telephone mode, and up to 100 stored speed dial numbers.

Connectivity comes in the forms of a high speed USB 2.0 port for single computer connectivity and a 10/100 Base T Ethernet network port for home or office networking. Of course, a standard RJ-11 telephone port is incorporated as well for fax support.

A two line, 16 character LCD display menu makes navigating through an incredible amount of fine tuning options easy, and fast. Copy control buttons and fax control buttons are separated for a less confused approach to stand alone navigation. Via the display menu and dedicated controls, users can take advantage of scan to e mail, scan to application, and scan to file features.

With the HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf’s standard memory locked at 64 MBs, the device should suffer minimal slowdown under heavy conditions. Unfortunately, the MFC does not support memory expansion in any form. The unit comes with a built in 400 MHz Marvel processor, yet no option for an external duplexor, or additional paper trays. With very little expandability, but a very well balanced specification list, the HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf is a great option for the home office.

HP LaserJet 4100 ? Expandable 250 MHz Monochrome Printer

The HP LaserJet 4100 series is a set of monochrome laser printing machines designed not only to operate with impressive speed and power, but to offer users complete customization over their hardware with options such as an additional paper tray and network card for Ethernet support. The base model 4100 also comes stock with a range of unique features of its own such as data retention.

When either an optional internal hard drive is incorporated into the HP LaserJet 4100′s hardware, or an increase in memory totaling at least 32 MBs, HP’s Rip Once data retention options become active. When in use, frequently used information can be stored internally in the device and reproduced quickly. While the memory is expandable up to 265 MBs, the device’s standard 16 MBs of built in memory is not enough to activate the feature.

In the 4100′s three model variations with standard upgrades, the HP LaserJet 4100n, HP LaserJet 4100tn, and HP LaserJet 4100dtn, 32 MBs is standard, and would be expected for a model of this type considering that all three of the upgrades include network options. With the additional demands required of an Ethernet device, simultaneous input sources could potentially cause significant slowdown.

Other optional improvements found in the upgraded models include an additional 500 sheet paper tray and an automatic duplexor. On the models with additional trays, or upgraded base models, the HP LaserJet 4100′s total paper storage capacity totals 1,100 sheets, which includes the 100 additional sheets found in the device’s priority feed slot.

Available for separate purchase is a 75 page envelope feeder which is perfect for businesses that require a large amount of custom postage. The external automatic duplexor can also be added to any of the models lacking it, and makes double sided printing completely mechanical, saving users time, and reducing paper costs by as much as half.

With HP’s Ultra Precise toner, ProRes 1200 dot per inch resolution is selectable for maximum quality, and FastRes 1200 can also be chosen for optimal speed, though quality will suffer to a very small degree. When FastRes is in use, the advertised print speed becomes up to 25 pages per minute for letter sized paper, and up to 24 pages per minute for legal sized, making the HP LaserJet 4100 one of the faster small office printers on the market.

A 250 MHz built in RISC processor should keep print speeds high even under network stress, while HP’s Instant On fuser keeps warm up time at zero and first page out time at only 12 seconds. The unit’s incredible monthly duty cycle of 150,000 imprinted pages suggests that even under constant abuse, the HP LaserJet 4100 will function without incident.

As a small to medium sized office workgroup printer, the HP LaserJet 4100 functions adequately, though its price range most likely prevents it from being ideal for home use. Its bulkiness contributes to this as well, but should be no problem for an office building with any reasonable amount of workspace.

Hp Laserjet 2430 ? 400 Mhz Expandable Laser Printer

Clocking in with an incredibly fast 35 pages per minute print speed, the HP LaserJet 2430 sits as one of the crowning jewels of HP’s 2400 product line. The 2400 printers are all based on the same hardware and casing, but come with a range of different features including duplexing, and networking.

While the base model HP LaserJet 2430 does not have to additional hardware that its sister models do, such as the HP LaserJet 2430n which comes with a built in network card, or the HP LaserJet 2430dtn which has extra paper storage and a duplexor, but this stripped down version of the model still boasts many of the same powerful specifications.

With 32 MBs of RAM standard, the HP LaserJet 2430 has only half the initial memory as its sister models with network abilities, which come with 64 MBs, but thanks to an additional 100 pin DDR DIMM slot left open, memory is expandable up to 288 MBs total (the HP LaserJet 2430n and above models can hold up to 320 MBs).

Also integrated into the hardware are two compact flash slots for flash memory, and HP’s MEt Memory Enhancement technology. With a wide range of memory options, and an incredibly fast 400 MHz MIPS 20ck processor, users can be sure that the HP LaserJet 2430 will not suffer from slowdown problems due to limited resources.b

A 100 sheet multipurpose tray and a 250 sheet legal sized paper tray compose the HP LaserJet 2430′s paper storage space. An additional 500 sheet supplemental paper tray can also be incorporated into the device, and the HP LaserJet 2430tn and 2430dtn come with the additional tray in box, resulting in an 850 sheet capacity printer.

The HP LaserJet 2430′s duty cycle is advertised at 100,000 pages per month, meaning that the unit was designed to function even under stressful demands, and virtually constant usage. HP backs its claim as well with their one year limited service policy and a year of web and telephone based technical support.

Thanks to HP ProRes 1200 and REt Resolution Enhancement technology, a high quality 1200 x 1200 dot per inch resolution is not only obtainable, but obtainable at top speed for large quantities of professional, crisp looking text and mixed graphics. HP also includes an 80 font typeset for document customization control.

HP covers its bases as far as connectivity with the printer, with not only networking options available, but an IEEE Parallel port, a USB port, and an EIO slot left open on the device for multiple wired connection possibilities. The device also support a wide range of special media types, including envelopes and custom letterhead, as well as custom paper sizes ranging from that of an index card (3 x 5 inches) up to that of a legal sized document (8.5 x 14 inches).

With such high print speeds and paper storage options, the HP LaserJet 2430 easily places itself at the top end of monochrome laser devices in its category, and is perfect for the small office with heavy printing demands.

HP LaserJet 4300 ? Expandable Business Level Printer

The HP LaserJet 4300 is the third in a series of monochrome lasers from HP that has progressed in speed by an astonishing ten pages per minute throughout the series, starting with the HP LaserJet 4100 at 25 pages per minute, then moving on to the HP LaserJet 4200 at 35 pages per minute, and resulting in the HP LaserJet 4300′s 45 pages per minute speed. Increased speed, with the help of a highly beefed up processor, are just a couple of the new and improved features found in this incredibly efficient model.

With its 350 MHz processor ranking it a full 100 MHz above that of the HP LaserJet 4100, the HP LaserJet 4300 soars through large workloads in no time. The unit was also designed specifically for extremely high output and, as such, is equipped with a 200,000 page maximum monthly duty cycle. With this much leniency given on overall output, the 4300 would be perfect for an office network. HP offers a network expansion option, and also various upgraded versions of the model that are network ready right out of the box.

With an unmatched number of six possible variants on the HP LaserJet 4300 hardware, users can easily select the model that best suits their needs without having to worry about installing upgrade hardware. The standard HP LaserJet 4300n matches the base model on most levels, but includes a Jetdirect 10/100 Base TX print server card, plus a boost in RAM of 16 MBs.

All other upgraded models include Jetdirect, while the HP LaserJet 4300tn also includes an additional 500 sheet tray, and the HP LaserJet 4300dtn includes both the additional paper storage tray and a built in external duplexor as well, allowing for automatic double sided printing. Two other models offer the choice between a 500 sheet stapler stacker hardware accessory and a standard stacker for organizing output mechanically.

All models operate with HP’s Instant On fuser technology that reduces warm up time to virtually zero, as well as assists in keeping the device’s first page out time to a mere 8.5 seconds. Quality runs high with the unit, and is selectable at resolutions up to 1200 x 1200 dots per inch. Lower quality levels are also optional for faster output, and toner saver modes can help reduce overall ink usage, therefore cutting costs.

Also helpful in cost reduction is the duplexor option, which can not only reduce paper usage by as much as half, but add a professional, two sided look to brochures and documents. The base model HP LaserJet 4300 includes only a single 500 sheet standard paper tray, but also offers a fold out 100 sheet priority feed slot for multiple media types, bringing the unit’s overall paper storage capacity to 600 (1,100 for the upgraded models).

With so many hardware expansion options available, the HP LaserJet 4300 could potentially be expanded to hold a very outstanding 2,600 total sheets. Incredible speed complemented by noteworthy expansion options makes the LaserJet 4300 one of the more versatile machines on the market.

HP LaserJet 4650dn/4650dtn/4650hdn/4650n ? Expandable Color Laser Printer

While business level color laser print technology can be considered nowhere near cheap, it is possible to find existing models, such as those found in the HP LaserJet 4650 series, for around a thousand dollars or less. If your business would benefit from the additional appeal and presentation factor of full color imagery on a large scale, then a device such as these may be worth the overall cost.

The HP LaserJet 4650 series is broken up into four powerful hardware sets that all include networking. Due to the incredible cost of color toner, having a color laser printer on a network can be dangerous concerning overhead, but each device is capable of a single computer setup as well. HP monitoring software is also included to help manage the device’s toner usage.

Additionally, the HP LaserJet 4650d models include a built in automatic duplexor for double sided printing. Double sided printing can add a professional, attractive feel even to black and white documents and, when you consider the possibilities when you add color, the duplexor option becomes even more valuable.

The HP LaserJet 4650dtn version of the device also includes an additional paper tray for extra storage, and easier switching between paper types. All versions leave the option open of adding additional trays separately, as well as adding a variety of helpful and efficient hardware accessories such as a 20GB hard disk.

While the HP LaserJet 4650hdn comes complete with the 20 GB HP high performing hard drive previously installed internally, upgrading the others’ memory storage capacity is an option as well. Random access memory comes at 160 MBs in the base model, and an additional memory chip included brings the other models to a stock memory total of 288 MBs. Should buyers find that these numbers prove insufficient, additional RAM can be added via two industry standard 200 pin dual data rate DDR SDRAM small outline DIMM slots, but the device cannot exceed a total of 544 MBs. Three flash memory card slots are left open as well.

Each model varies in terms of out of box paper storage capacity. The base model HP LaserJet 4650n comes with a standard 500 sheet paper tray and a 100 sheet fold out priority feed slot for paper types that require a straight through paper path, bringing the base paper storage total to 600 sheets. The HP LaserJet 4650dtn comes complete with one additional 500 sheet tray, and the HP LaserJet 4650hdn comes with two which brings the unit’s total potential paper storage capacity to 1,600 sheets.

Unfortunately, the HP LaserJet 4650 series offers a maximum of only 600 x 600 dots per inch resolution for standard printing, but HP has included a resolution enhancement mode, HP ImageREt 3600, that can produce 3600 dot per inch quality for high resolution color imagery, unfortunately print speed will suffer drastically when in use. With four models to choose from, the HP LaserJet 4650 series could potentially meet a variety of possible demands concerning high quality, laser color printing.

Hp Laserjet 4000 ? Expandable Desktop Laser Printer

With over six hardware expansion options, the HP LaserJet 4000 offers the customizability of an industrial grade copy machine in the body of a personal printer. An optional hard drive, envelope feeder, and additional paper tray are just a few of the add ons available for this versatile unit that was once the top of the line.

The HP LaserJet 4000′s 100 MHz RISC processor helps to keep its print speed running at an optimal rate, and incoming projects spooling up fast. For letter sized documents, the unit can print at a rate of up to 17 pages per minute. The device is capable of up to 8.5 x 14 inch legal sized documents as well, but print speeds will suffer slightly when printing them.

HP’s Instant On fuser allows for a warm up time of less than 15 seconds. First page out time also rests at 15 seconds when dealing with letter sized documents. On board memory consists of 4 MBs included, but if a user chooses to expand the memory via the included expansion slots, additional features become unlocked in the device, such as a time saving HP Transmit Once setting for reduced network traffic.

Some versions of the HP LaserJet 4000, such as the LaserJet 4000n and LaserJet 4000tn, come equipped with an additional 4 MB chip in one of the three available DIMM storage slots. The more a user utilizes these memory slots, the more on board storage is available for forms, fonts, and signatures, though each slot can only compensate either a 2 MB or 4 MB memory card.

With two low resolution print quality options (300 dots per inch and 600 dots per inch) users can choose speed over clarity, but via HP FastRes 1200 resolution enhancement technology, a simulated 1200 dot per inch resolution can be reached. When using the HP PCL 6 print language, the HP LaserJet 4000 can even operate at its maximum print speed in FastRes mode. HP ProRes 1200 mode is also selectable, and allows for true 1200 x 1200 dot per inch resolution to be achieved with both HP PCL 6 and PostScript.

Regardless of REt Resolution Enhancement technology, half toning can only achieve 220 levels of gray, meaning the HP LaserJet 4000 would function best printing black and white text and simple charts and graphs, as imagery would not appear at a professional level.

An optional duplexor can be purchased separately to activate a double sided printing mode that can add a professional look to workloads, as well as reduce paper usage and costs by as much as half. Other options include an HP JetDirect 600N Print Server, and a 1 Gbyte hard drive for expanded storage.

Though an additional 500 sheet paper tray is included with some variations of the HP LaserJet 4000, it is also available for separate purchase for current owners who determine that more storage is necessary due to high volume usage. Though the model and its sister units are notably dated at this point, their powerful specifications speak for themselves.
