For the easiest possible setup of a network printer in your home or small office, go with a wireless equipped unit such as the HP OfficeJet J4680. With 802.11b/g wireless technology, users can now forget about hassling with messy chords, and provide print, fax, scan, and copy abilities easily to an entire household.

Utilizing HP color thermal inkjet technology, full color printing becomes both fast and affordable. HP even includes photo friendly features in the HP OfficeJet J4680 such as optimized resolution modes and HP’s Real Life technology that includes HP Adaptive Lighting and HP Auto Red Eye Removal. Standard black and white resolution, primarily for document printing, is selectable up to 600 x 600 dots per inch, while color print modes can be set much higher.

When using select HP photo papers, up to 4800 x 1200 dots per inch quality is printable, while regular paper tops out at 1200 x 1200 dots per inch. When making a copy, only 1200 x 1200 dots per inch are scannable, so photos will turn out best when printed from a computer. When lower resolutions are selected, color print speed can run as high as 22 pages per minute and black and white prints can be as fast as 28 pages per minute. Photos can print in as little as 26 seconds.

Though the HP OfficeJet J4680 is fully wirelessly functioning, it also includes a variety of connection ports for various setups and features. A USB 2.0 port is left open for single host PC setups and potentially optimized operating speeds, while a front USB port is also available for various device connectivity. Phone ports are also included for faxing and an optional external headset.

A special option for borderless printing can be selected for photograph’s, but can also be used on paper up to 8.5 in. x 11 in. in size. Meanwhile, a variety of print languages come standard with the machine for maximum performance and include HP PCL 3 GUI, PJL Printer Job Language, and PML Printer Management Language.

The built in fax machine runs off of a 33.6 Kbps fax modem which allows for fax speeds of up to 3 seconds per page, while a long list of fax features and options give the machine a top of the line standing. Up to 99 numbers can be stored in the unit’s speed dial memory, as well as up to 140 pages worth of data. Other helpful features include fax forwarding, fax polling, PC interfacing, phone TAM, and a junk barrier than can work congruently with caller ID.

Additionally, color faxing is also made possible for unique fax possibilities, though color resolution tops out at 200 x 200 dots per inch versus black and white quality of 300 x 300 dots per inch. With front panel controls and a full lineup of HP support software, as well as a one year limited service plan, the HP OfficeJet J4680 seems like an ideal buy for the home user looking for a color printer.

I can’t find all HP drivers in Mac OS X Leopard for a printer attached via a networked Windows machine? Help?

The printer is an HP Color Laserjet 3600n. I know the driver, as well as most every printer driver out there, is included in Leopard. However, when I try to connect to it as a networked printer attached to a Windows machine it requires me to choose the correct driver and does not automatically work like it does via hard USB connection. Only an abbreviated list shows up which does not include any drivers that look like they are appropriate. I’ve already downloaded and installed the Mac drivers for the printer and it doesn’t change the list that I have to choose from. This is one of a handful of networked printers attached to Windows machines that I’m having trouble connecting to. Any help is appreciated. I’m a new Mac user and I’m hoping I’m missing something simple here. Thanks!

Hp Laserjet 3100 ? Multifunctional Fax Machine With Scanner

Unlike the rectangular, flat bed designed multifunctional centers most commonly seen today, the HP LaserJet 3100 looks more like a fax machine than a four function, all in one unit. Despite the device’s lack of a flip up top, its performance specifications are at least decent enough on some levels to remain worth keeping operation for the small business.

Though the HP LaserJet 3100 tops out at a horrificly slow 6 pages per minute speed for both printing and copying, it at least does so at the decent resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch. HP’s famout Instant On technology helps to ease the blow, to a degree, thanks to a warm up time of virtually zero seconds.

Scan quality falls a little lower, at only 300 x 300 dots per inch when utilizing optical technology, though an enhanced mode can boost resolution up to 600 dots per inch. With 256 levels of gray, imagery will not scan or copy at a professional level, and therefore the HP LaserJet 3100 should generally only be used for text documents.

Faxing also operates at six seconds per page which, unlike printing, is actually a fairly decent rate of speed and, surprisingly, it does it with only a 14.4 K bits per second fax modem. Features such as speed dialing and distinctive ring detection are present in the hardware, along with automatic fax and answering machine switching, fax forwarding, memory receive, remote retrieval, and broadcasting.

A maximum monthly duty cycle of 6,000 single sided pages per month should suffice considering the hardware’s speed limitations, and the same goes for the HP LaserJet 3100′s 2,000 page scanner duty cycle.

The HP LaserJet 3100 comes equipped with an automatic document feeder with a 30 page capacity so, though it may be slow, large copy and fax workloads can be left alone for the unit to handle on its own. When faxing multiples, or single pages, users are given resolution options of standard (203 x 98 dpi), fine (203 x 196 dpi), superfine (300 x 300 dpi), and a photo mode which matches the superfine’s resolution, and incorporates half tones for better blending.

Paper handling abilities come in the form of a 100 sheet capacity paper input bin, and a 100 sheet paper output bin. When printing special media types such as envelopes, the device also offers an alternate straight through paper path for wrinkle free printing of thicker media, so transparencies, card stock, postcards, and labels come out looking professional.

Not only does the HP LaserJet 3100 utilize its 2 MBs of storage to hold up to 175 programmable speed dials and up to 25 group distribution lists, it also comes complete with ten single touch individual buttons for one touch dialing to frequent receiving parties.

While the HP LaserJet 3100 is considerably slow, it is worth mentioning that, technically, it does have all the essentials. As a multifunctional device, it may not be as sleek as many of the newer models, but with technical support and toner still available today, it could prove to remain an asset.

HP LaserJet Pro M1130 ? Everyday Print, Scan, Copy Machine

The HP LaserJet Pro M1130 is part of a series HP has designed to be suitable for both home and office use. With various expanded versions of the product available with included hardware such as fax modems and network cards, the LaserJet Pro M1130 sits as the bare bones, base unit for the series, and is perfect for the individual user looking to add a full range of basic print, copy, and scan features to their hardware set, while keeping cost at a minimum.

With a flatbed design that does not include an automatic document feeder, the HP LaserJet Pro M1130 allows only for single copies and scans to be performed at one time. However, a flip top design makes for easy access and three dimensional scan capabilities for objects such as books or magazines. A full, legal sized document glass also allows for the maximum scan surface one would find on a personal MFC.

Though the HP LaserJet Pro M1130 does not include a fax machine or networking functions, its rudimentary print and copy features are excellent for the price range.  No memory card expandability or external duplex options also reduce the overall flexibility of the unit, while keeping costs at a minimum. While additional paper storage is also not available, the unit’s 150 sheet input tray may prove to be enough for the single user.

Paper output capacity comes at a surprisingly large proportion to the input tray, with a 100 sheet face down bin incorporated into the device. With such a small input tray, an output tray this large almost doesn’t even make sense, though one could potentially find uses for it when taking advantage of the up to 99 maximum copies at once from a single source.

The scan features are very basic, and minimal. The device advertises a scan rate of up to 6 pages per minute but, without a built in automatic document feeder, this seems highly unlikely to be performed entirely by hand. Optical scanning resolution is high, at 1200 dots per inch, and a bit depth of 24 is also of decent quality. Convenient scan to e mail, scan to application, and scan to file options make for a high versatility level, but in a heartbreaking twist of fate, no dedicated controls for these features are mounted to the device, forcing users to make trips back and forth from the PC to operate scan functions.

Standard memory is quite low, at only 8 MBs, and is not expandable, yet processing speed is quite high, at 400 MHz. The HP LaserJet Pro M1130′s maximum monthly duty cycle of a very low 8,000 pages further solidifies the device’s stance as a light duty, personal printer, and with HP’s recommendation of only 250 to 2,000 sheets, high capacity output becomes even less of an option. The HP LaserJet Pro M1130 is a perfect device for one looking for a very well rounded unit at an affordable price, without all the bells and whistles that make some devices more complicated.

Hp Color Laserjet Cm2320Fxi – Color Printer, Copier, Fax Machine

HP’s cleverly designed HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi uses a four cartridge system that incorporates the drum unit into the toner cartridges themselves, making the cost of black and white printing the same with this color model as it would be with a monochrome laser device. It also makes toner swaps simpler and more user friendly, as well as increases efficiency slightly. With the ability to copy, print, and fax in full color, all from a single unit, heavy usage should be expected with the LaserJet CM2320fxi, meaning every penny will count.

With a price tag significantly under a thousand dollars, but still quite high for a color multifunctional center, you would expect a lot from the HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi, and it delivers. It comes with not only a full spectrum of powerful, standard features, but a set of time saving bells and whistles as well, such as an automatic document feeder and a built in duplexor.

With built in duplexing capabilities, two sided documents can be produced automatically, and quickly, making for a workload that not only has a professional feel to it, but is also up to twice as efficient as standard printing as far as paper usage. A 50 sheet automatic document feeder also increases speed of use when dealing with large quantities of input, allowing a user to load a stack of paper and leave it unattended for automatic copying, scanning, or faxing.

Though the HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi lacks a legal sized flatbed, it does offer other powerful paper handling abilities including two 250 sheet standard input trays, a 50 sheet multi purpose tray with a rather large 30 sheet envelope capacity, and the 50 sheet automatic document feeder. The output bin holds up to 150 sheets, and a single 250 sheet additional paper tray is available for separate purchase.

The HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi’s maximum monthly duty cycle is set at a seemingly low 40,000 imprinted sheets, and its recommended use is even more disappointing, with a volume of 1,000 to 2,500 pages suggested. If problems do arise, HP has at least included their standard one year warranty with the device, which includes their web and phone based tech support, as well as next day guaranteed repair service which ensures the maximum usage from your investment.

Print speeds are good for either color or black and white, with both topping out at up to 21 pages per minute on letter sized paper. A first page out time of 17.9 seconds is more than reasonable as well. Print resolution, however, is not as reasonable, with only 600 x 600 dots per inch in both monochrome and color, making the HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi great for color charts and presentations, but far from a photo quality printer.

While there are other devices out there with lower price tags that can offer faster speeds, the HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi is a unit that truly defines the term, “all in one.” Every basic, standard feature seen in the print market today is incorporated into this device.
