This no frills monochrome laser printer, theHP LaserJet P1505, has a hardware combination that makes it simply one of the coolest printing options available on the market today. It is designed and built for literally one thing and one thing alone: speed. It has almost no luxury features, and no expandability options, yet comes with a low price tag and an incredibly fast first page out time that beats out even the most high end, industrial grade MFCs and copy machines. It is definitely a unit worth taking a look at if you’re in the market for a desktop printer.

HP advertises the HP LaserJet P1505 as being, “surprisingly fast!” and they don’t disappoint. Pounding out pages at a speed of up to 24 pages per minute, this little printer is easily one of the fastest devices in its price category, and the unit’s incredibly fast page out time of only 6.5 seconds makes it one of the fastest devices in any price category! Manufactured with speed in mind, the unit delivers with the help of HP’s Instant On technology that reduces warm up time to virtually zero.

HP’s patented, specially designed spherically shaped toner also helps to keep things moving not only quickly, but at high quality. The HP all in one toner cartridge is the secret to what makes this level of performance possible at such an affordable level, and also makes toner refills easier than ever.

While the HP LaserJet P1505 includes only a standard high speed USB 2.0 port for single PC hosting, another version of the model, the HP LaserJet P1505n, comes complete with a network card and Ethernet port for printer sharing, and also includes a boost in internal memory up to 32 MBs, over the stock memory of only 2 MBs.

Keeping thing’s simple, HP has incorporated a super easy to use control panel onto the hardware itself, while the HP LaserJet P1505′s paper handling abilities also assist in maintaining the unit’s user friendly approach with a large 150 sheet output tray. Input capacity comes in the form of a respectable 250 sheet standard letter or legal sized paper tray, and a 10 sheet priority feed slot that can handle thicker media types such as envelopes and card stock.

For wireless networking, an HP wireless printing upgrade accessory is available to make connectivity completely cordless, and easy to set up. Also available are 2 and 3 year warranty extensions over the standard one year limited replacement plan that also includes web and phone based technical support.

Though the HP LaserJet P1505‘s maximum monthly duty cycle is slightly limited at only 8,000 total pages, with a recommended monthly duty volume of 250 to 2,000 pages, the unit doesn’t pretend to be a high volume printer. It is advertised accurately as the device that it is: one of the cheapest, fastest desktop printers out there, if not the fastest for the price. Any home user, or even small office with light print demands, will be happy with the machine.

Hp Laserjet P1505 Review

Design

The P1505 will certainly not take up too much room on your desktop. At 8.9×14.9×9.6 inches, it is smaller than many inkjet printers and weighing only 12.9 pounds it is not difficult to move single-handed. Without an LCD screen, the control panel consists of an array of lights labelled with icons that are so confusing, you often have to refer to the on screen documentation to figure out what the light sequence is telling you. HP has obviously cut corners to get down to this price and the paper guides that are located deep within the input tray are small and hard to move. The output tray also has a rather flimsy fold out extension showing more cost paring.

Cartridges

The printer is supplied with a starter cartridge with a limited capacity of 1,000 pages, so it will not be long before you are forced to buy a replacement. The only toner cartridge suitable for this printer is the HP CB436a with a capacity of 2,000 pages and is not intended for heavy-duty use. This cartridge type is currently only used in this machine and two multifunction printers and costs a hefty £42. This yields a cost per page of over 2p, so it is not particularly economical. Compatible cartridges have not reached the market yet, so you cannot rely on this avenue for cost savings.

Performance

Unfortunately there was also evidence of cost cutting in the print tests. Plain text is handled fairly well given the likely workload, HP’s new spherical toner delivering crisp characters, however graphic performance isn’t up to par. Gradients were afflicted by plenty of banding and the maximum resolution of 600×600 dpi is half of that available from some other budget printers, like the Brother HL-5240. If print quality is disappointing, the same cannot be said for print speed. This printer hit 22ppm in tests that included both text and graphics, a result that is excellent for a budget laser printer and is faster than many more expensive printers.

Verdict

If you are just after a fast affordable mono laser printer for your home office, at less than £90 the HP Laserjet P1505 may just fit the bill. But if you require a little more in the way of usable features or better quality output, you would be well advised to increase the budget slightly and look one division up, at the likes of the Brother HL-5240.
