How are IR and microwave images from remote sensing satellites printed? How do they substitute the wavelengths?

Question by Jaja: How are IR and microwave images from remote sensing satellites printed? How do they substitute the wavelengths?
Both Infrared and Microwave bands are invisible to the human eye

Best answer:

Answer by ★ Serabi Suspended ★
Both infrared and microwaves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which stretches from radio waves to gamma rays. each band of this spectrum corresponds to a small range of frequencies. each frequency is uniquely connected with an energy level.

The total spectrum is very wide. Our eyes respond only to a very small band called the visible band. However, different chemicals do react to certain higher or lower level of energy bands and hence can be used as photographic plates for detecting and measuring some of these radiations.

Satellites nowadays use sensors whose working principle is based on photoelectric effect, converting radiation reaching the sensor iinto electric charge, which can then be easily measured and processed.

Essentially, the energy detected over a given spectral band, whether it is in the visible, infrared or microwave band, is converted to an array of digits corresponding to the energy range and radioed to ground stations.

After receiving it, those values corresponding to the measured energy range (known as grey levels) are finally printed on a computer screen as a picture or as a conventional photograph.

Should my Job be Printed or Photocopied?

This article could also be called digital printing or offset printing. Photocopy is an old term that primarily describes black on white copy work. The business has evolved into color as well.

The digital printing is mostly done through copier machines on the low end and digital presses on the high end. The term printing is usually associated with offset printing on presses that have to be set up, put in register and adjusted to get to the right color. Although the technology has become automated making offset presses more competitive in getting a job ready to be run in a shorter period of time you still have more fixed material costs on setting up for a printing press.

That is the beauty of digital presses is realistically there is very little or no set up time or material costs to run a job. Their downfall is they run on a small sheet and at one speed with the maximum speed being slower than the top speed of an offset printing press. All things being equal short run jobs of 500 -1000 press sheets or less will normally be more cost effective on digital presses and as you go above those quantities it becomes better to print on an offset press.

Quality is also a consideration to consider. Offset printing for the most part will give you a better quality job. Digital printing has improved significantly over the last 5 years to the point of it being hard to tell the difference between offset and digital. That being said pictures and solids are still not reproduces quite as well digitally.

Time is the other consideration. How quickly do you need it? This question can also help you determine whether digital or offset is better. If you need something that afternoon or the next day digital printing is known for quick turntimes. Offset printing because of the different steps it still goes through will normally take longer.

In summary if you need 50 of something overnight do digital printing. If you need 100,000 of a high end brochure and aren’t Daddy Warbucks the job should be printed offset.

Why Colour Match Printed USB Memory Sticks

With so many standard colours available why would you choose to pay a little extra for a pantone matched body shell, particularly if its going to add a couple of days to the lead time?

Pantone matching the body shell is a process that allows you to specify the exact colour the shell (the case of the memory stick) is manufactured in. Standard colours typically include red, blue, white, black, yellow and green but on some models the standard colour pallet does offer more choice. Even when there is a wider choice of standard colours if you want the USB sticks to “pick out” one of the key colours from your logo then typically (unless you’re very luck) the only option is to get the shell custom made and pantone matched.

Why do it? Well, colours are often used to portray the essence, the DNA of a brand or brand identity and using a colour that is a close match rather than an exact match dilutes the effort put into the brand. Can you ever see Coca Cola using branded USB memory sticks with a red body colour that was not the “Coca Cola” pantone red or Starbucks buying green USB sticks that were not pantone matched to the specific green of their logo – the short answer is no.

Where there is not enough time to get colour matched USB sticks produced companies tend to go with a neutral colour (black , white or silver) and then print their logo either using the proper pantone references or print the colour in a mono colour, e.g. black one white or white on black.

The reality is that colour or pantone matched USB sticks are the best option if time and budget permits. This way you get exactly the colour you want, there is no compromise in terms of your brand strategy and more importantly when the USB sticks are distributed they will reinforce your brand and products associated with it.

In terms of cost, pantone matching typically adds around £50 to the overall cost of the order so amortised across a few hundred USB sticks its pennies. Pantone matching will add 1-2 days at most to the production lead-time but the end results are worth the wait.

The most contentious printed leaflets ever

Leaflet printing is a great way to get your business noticed. Clubs, bars and restaurants are among the businesses that make heavy use of leaflets in order to promote special events that are going on. However, one UK night club took it too far when they had leaflets printed showing the late Pope John Paul II holding a bottle of Fosters beer and dancing with an attractive blonde woman wearing a skimpy blue dress.

The printed leaflet caused controversy when Poles and Catholics began to complain about the flyer to the Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality (ISCRE) in the end the Advertising Standards Authority banned the leaflet saying it was offensive.

The aim of this leaflet was not meant to offend people it was simply meant to generate awareness of a club night. It was distributed to promote a night called Berserk at Club Fire & Ice in Ipswich. Although the leaflet was banned the club got a lot of promotion in the national press and on many websites. You know what they say no PR is bad PR.

If you don’t think offending some people’s religious beliefs is bad enough perhaps you will think promoting intercourse to teenagers is unacceptable.

A leaflet by the NHS was printed stating school kids have the right to an enjoyable sex life with regular activity being good for their cardiovascular health.

The messaging used on the leaflet said “an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away”. Other recommendations mentioned were health experts recommend 30 minutes physical activity 3 times a week “What about sex or masturbation twice a week?”

One of the authors of the leaflet said the message was meant to put people off having sex until they were sure they would enjoy it, however most adults who saw the leaflet did not agree with what it was promoting.

Before you release any advertising which may be interpreted in the wrong way do a bit of research to ensure you will not offend people.

Although using religious figures in a litigious way is not the best way to drum up a large reaction, controversy and crazy designs in your leaflet printing can get your business noticed.

Leaflet printing is a great way to promote your business.
