What are Universities doing with tens of thousands of Branded USB Memory Sticks

They get it. Universities understand that USB Memory sticks are an ideal vehicle to communicate with prospective students at Freshers’ Fairs and to provide them a tangible reminder of the University and all it has to offer.

Whilst this is not the only reason UK Universities have ordered thousands and thousands of USB Memory sticks it is one of the prime motivators.

Lets face it when you go to a Freshers’ Fair you’ll typically come away laden down with a small forests worth of information, much of it printed on high quality paper at great expense to the University and to the environment. Are these necessary, will they all be read or will most end up in the bin (hopefully a re-cycling bin)

A USB Memory stick won’t necessarily get rid of all the brochures, forms, flyers and other documentation but it has the potential to reduce significantly the amount of printed material and waste.

Additionally by pre-loading the USB Memory stick with slide shows, music, arts performances, videos, embedded links to web sites etc you can offer so much more and because its not all being printed it can be offered to a wider audience for less cost (that’s even allowing for the costs of the USB Memory stick itself).

The University does not have to worry about loading the data onto the Memory Stick either. Typically data is loaded onto the memory stick at the point of manufacture (because its cheaper) but, if, as is often the case with Freshers’ Fairs, the information is not ready until the last minute the data can be bulk loaded in the UK using the services of UK based “data loading” specialists.

Combine these benefits with the ability to print the University logo, crest. Motto and other key messages on the USB Memory sticks and you can see why Universities are increasingly embracing USB Memory Sticks.

Of course once the prospective student has reviewed the information loaded onto the USB stick the data can be erased (assuming the University has not “protected the data from deletion”). The student can then use the memory stick to save their coursework onto.

Branded USB Memory Sticks loaded with data are not only a great way for a University to promote itself but unlike its paper counterparts a USB Memory stick provides value way beyond the Freshers’ Fair.

Branded USB Memory Sticks Not To Be Confused With Memory Sticks

A Memory Stick is a removable flash memory card format that was developed and launched by Sony in late 1998. Memory Sticks are a proprietary design of Sony’s and are commonly used as a storage medium in Sony digital cameras, MP3 and MP4 players, hand-held consoles and video cameras.

Since their launch various “flavours” of the Memory Stick have been introduced including the Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, the Micro and Pro-HD. These variants embrace higher speed formats and smaller form factors but of late it is a format that has struggled to keep up with the demand and usage of SD cards in the market. Sony have now introduced their own version of the SD card which to some has signalled start of the end of the Memory Stick.

Memory Sticks could theoretically have been used by the promotions industry as a portable storage medium but “memory cards” have just not caught on like USB Memory Sticks.  The primary reason is that these cards are typically used “inside a device” and therefore any branding is not on display, equally, the shape and size of a Memory Stick does not lend itself to being carried easily.

USB Memory sticks, also referred to, as USB Flash Drives, USB Thumb Drives and USB Pen Drives have become the dominant medium for portable storage. Not only are they incredibly easy to use but also they are lightweight, portable, easy to attach to a key ring or lanyard and these days they are available in a wide range of memory sizes up to a whopping 64GB! They also come in a wide range of styles, colours and shapes, which can all, be over printed, engraved or embossed with a logo.

If you’ve got data to save, store and transport then for the majority of people a USB memory stick is the preferred option. It’s partly for this reason that they are now commonly used by companies as a promotional product or a way of distributing data and information (e.g. at a seminar, conference or press event).

A USB Memory Stick rather than a Memory Stick, printed up with a company logo is a popular and sought after item with a high perceived value. Users of USB memory sticks not only value them but they use them on a regular basis and as such any brand printed on them gets excellent exposure and excellent and positive brand association.

By pre-loading sales brochures, price lists, technical data sheets, media files and web links onto the memory sticks before they are distributed companies can offset the cost of buying the branded memory sticks against the print savings they make.

So when considering Memory Sticks as a promotional tool make sure it’s a promotional USB Memory Sticks you seek quotes on.

In what way do you engage your customers? Unless you own a country store in a little town then interacting with your customers in a personal and meaningful way, is not always an easy task.

Companies are increasingly turning to the Web and other technical devices to reach their customer bases. Of course your company has a website, and makes use of social media, posts articles and blogs and sends out a newsletter. So why not leverage your media campaign with Promotional USB Sticks, It’s a marketer’s dream. Merchandise giveaways are one of the most individual and effective of all marketing activities. Engage and interact with your target audience with a unique personal giveaway. Preload your company logo and your promotional message on a custom branded USB stick. Add your logo via printing or engraving. There is a good choice of drive capacities, to choose from, as well as a selection of styles, shapes and colours, such as: the keychain pendant, Pen Drives, Flash Memory Sticks, Promotional Sports drives, and more, are all available with your custom printed logo.

Benefits of Using Branded Merchandise;

Branded merchandise is preferable over advertising with radio, TV, or printed material. The use of branded gifts allows you to aim very specifically, and engage your target audience. This tight targeting strategy will save money because your marketing funds will be used in the area that will most likely give you a return on your investment.

Permanence. Other forms of media, such as TV, radio and printed media are “here today, and gone tomorrow,” but branded gift merchandise has a much longer shelf-life. If you provide branded promotional merchandise, that your target audience will use every day, they will have a continuous reminder of your brand and your message.

Subliminal appeal. Think about appealing to more senses with your promotional merchandise and capture your audience. Physical contact with your carefully chosen promotional merchandise has much more impact than a transitory medium such as TV, radio or print. Whether they are actually aware of it or not, your targeted audience will be subliminally digesting this information, so that when they have a need for your products or services, your company will be an immediate thought and hopefully win you the business.

Maintain customer loyalty. The giving of promotional gifts to your existing clients gives you the opportunity for interaction with your customers, which paves the way for further promotion of your company and keeps your business in the minds of your target audience. Branded gifts are also a reward for customer loyalty.

Increase your client base. Giving well-chosen branded merchandise to prospective customers can create in them a desire to buy from you rather than your competitors.

USB Flash Drives are the perfect solution. These devices are small and portable. They can be imprinted or engraved with your logo and message onto individual drives. It is a great marketing strategy because you will have the ability to include a video, pictures, and even music!

USB memory drives are favourites as a promotional gift, so make the transition from other forms of advertisement to USB flash drives, and get your name in front of your target market or audience.

Pantone Matched USB Memory Sticks

print usb
by *USB*

If you’re in the market for some branded USB memory sticks for your company and you want your logo printed on the sticks then one option is to get the body of the USB stick pantone matched to a primary colour from your logo.

Pantone matching is simply a way to define a particular colour and reproduce that same colour time and time again to the same level of accuracy (albeit the material the colour is printed onto can have a bearing on the finished result). It’s a technique that is commonly used across the design and print industry and the use of “pantone matched” printing is a way to ensure consistency of a company’s brand irrespective of who is producing the printed product.

Pantone matching is commonly used in two distinctly different ways when customised USB memory sticks are produced:

The colours of any logo, brand or design that is printed onto the USB sticks are typically defined by the customer(s) in terms of pantone colour. This ensures a high degree of accuracy when the sticks are printed in the factory. Where pantone colours can’t be supplied the colours are matched on a “best match” basis and the accuracy of the finished article is very much in the hands of the printer. Whilst most printers have years of experience to draw upon and will typically produced good results on a “best match” basis there is always an element of risk when working (printing) this way.

Rather than buy USB flash drives in the standard colours (typically black, white, red, blue or silver) it’s possible to get them manufactured so that the body shell of the USB drives is an exact pantone match to any colour you want. This option involves mixing inks with the plastic when the fabrication is done to achieve an exact pantone matched body shell. The end results look stunning albeit the trick is to ensure you choose the colour of the body shell well so that it contrasts or works well with the logo printed onto the USB stick. On the Twister models where the logo is printed onto the “clip” that “twists” around it’s usual to match the body of the twister to one of the primary colours from the printed logo.

Pantone matching not only ensures accurate reproduction of colours but when it is used to produce a customised body shell the results lift the finished product from a “standard” USB flash drive to something that is unique. Whilst these “pantone matched” USB sticks are not truly bespoke sticks because they use a standard factory design then do illustrate that a significant amount of effort and thought has been put into their production.

Pantone matching of the body shell is only available on a limited range of USB memory sticks. Depending on the quantity ordered the incremental cost is relatively small but the results certainly justify it.

DIY Custom USB Memory Sticks

You don’t need to be good with a hammer, chisel or trowel to build your own custom USB memory stick – it’s not that sort of DIY project. But if you are looking for something a little challenging, interesting and fun then building your own custom USB stick is a great idea, incredibly rewarding and it’ll certainly get people talking.

The core component of any USB memory stick is a module that incorporates the USB connector, the flash memory and a controller chip for the flash memory. These three elements combine to give you a way of connecting your USB stick to a PC or Mac, to store data and to control the way the stored data is managed. The way in which this “module” is packaged is what gives you overall look and feel of a memory stick.

Commercial USB memory sticks are typically “housed” in standard rectangular plastic or plastic/metal shells some with a removable cap and some with an integral cap or cover like the ever-popular Twister USB flash drive. When you build your own USB drive you can be as creative as you like and we’ve seen all sorts of weird and wonderful examples over the years.

If you’re looking for a hands-on challenge for say a club a school class or Scout Group then a “build you own USB competition” is a brilliant idea. Children are typically avid users of USB flash drives and the idea of being able to design and build their own custom version is sure to get them fired up and get them thinking about all aspects of design, production and functionality.

If you are interested in custom USB flash drives for your business, school or university but you don’t want to build them yourselves then don’t worry because there are lots of companies offering a professional design, build and supply service. Do bear in mind that you’ll pay a little more for a custom USB stick but the end result will be worth it. Lead times are also longer at around 4 weeks compared to the standard 2 weeks for printed USB sticks.

Custom USB sticks are getting more and more popular because they are a sure fire way to get your USB memory stick(s) to stand out from the crowd. A few years ago very few branded or printed USB memory sticks were given away but today millions are given away so it’s increasingly important to get yours to grab people attention from the “get go”.

At USB2U we not only supply self-build USB kits but we offer a full design and build service so if you’re interested in Custom USB Memory Sticks give us a call and speak to one of the team.

Why Colour Match Printed USB Memory Sticks

print usb
by nickgraywfu

With so many standard colours available why would you choose to pay a little extra for a pantone matched body shell, particularly if its going to add a couple of days to the lead time?

Pantone matching the body shell is a process that allows you to specify the exact colour the shell (the case of the memory stick) is manufactured in. Standard colours typically include red, blue, white, black, yellow and green but on some models the standard colour pallet does offer more choice. Even when there is a wider choice of standard colours if you want the USB sticks to “pick out” one of the key colours from your logo then typically (unless you’re very luck) the only option is to get the shell custom made and pantone matched.

Why do it? Well, colours are often used to portray the essence, the DNA of a brand or brand identity and using a colour that is a close match rather than an exact match dilutes the effort put into the brand. Can you ever see Coca Cola using branded USB memory sticks with a red body colour that was not the “Coca Cola” pantone red or Starbucks buying green USB sticks that were not pantone matched to the specific green of their logo – the short answer is no.

Where there is not enough time to get colour matched USB sticks produced companies tend to go with a neutral colour (black , white or silver) and then print their logo either using the proper pantone references or print the colour in a mono colour, e.g. black one white or white on black.

The reality is that colour or pantone matched USB sticks are the best option if time and budget permits. This way you get exactly the colour you want, there is no compromise in terms of your brand strategy and more importantly when the USB sticks are distributed they will reinforce your brand and products associated with it.

In terms of cost, pantone matching typically adds around £50 to the overall cost of the order so amortised across a few hundred USB sticks its pennies. Pantone matching will add 1-2 days at most to the production lead-time but the end results are worth the wait.

Branded USB Memory Sticks ? Why Are So Many Being Given Away

It’s no exaggeration to say that millions and millions of Branded USB Memory Sticks are given away free every year and the trend is accelerating. But why, what makes a branded USB memory stick such a great item and what are they most commonly being used for?

Branded USB Memory Sticks are incredibly popular with everyone because:

They are incredibly handy gadgets that make storing and transporting large amounts of data very easy. They come in a range of designs and styles that look great when printed up with a logo or brand. Matching the body of many of the USB Memory Sticks to a primary colour from the printed brand is relatively easy to do and inexpensive and helps to lift the overall “look and feel” of the memory stick. People like to receive branded USB memory sticks because of their perceived value and because of their intrinsic usefulness. They are small and light so transportation, storage and distribution is never an issue. They have global appeal. Unlike some promotional products that only work in certain markets and cultures USB memory sticks have a universal appeal. They are easy to use and data (files, music, videos, presentations, etc.) can be stored onto the memory stick before they are distribution. Prices have fallen over the last few years making them a cost effective marketing and promotional tool.

What are the most common uses for Branded USB Memory Sticks?

Not surprisingly given their popularity the usage of memory sticks continues to grow and new and innovative uses for them are being found all the time. Some of the more common uses include:

Giveaways at trade shows, exhibitions and conferences – branded USB memory sticks are an ideal way to get your brand distributed and your sales brochures brought to life. Pre-loading links to your website, including sales videos and presentations together with product sheets and special offers. Seminars where they are typically pre-loaded with speakers notes, presentations and details of forthcoming seminars and events that the audience might be interested in. Press Launches – handing out a branded or even a custom shaped USB Memory stick at a press launch is a great way to engage with the invited journalists. Custom USB memory sticks manufactured in a shape to represent the event are becoming increasingly popular because of the “wow” factor and talking point they create. Product Launches – USB memory sticks printed with the logo or design of your product (or even manufactured in the shape of your product) and pre-loaded with product information, preview videos, pricing etc are popular. More and more companies are now using memory sticks are a core part of their overall sales and marketing mix and launch plans. University Fresher Fairs – every student loves something for nothing and if it can’t be beer then a USB memory stick is a good substitute particularly if you can pre-load it with lots of useful information for them on the university, life as a student, student offers, housing information, student union details etc. Schools – Many schools now mandate the use memory sticks and are either making them available to students free of charge or supplying them with the school crest/logo on at a subsidised rate.

Whilst not an exhaustive list it does illustrate the range of uses the once humble USB memory stick is now being put to.

Top 10 Tips for Buying Custom USB Memory Sticks

There is a real growth in the demand for custom USB Memory sticks but for many the world of promotional memory sticks, branded memory sticks, printed memory sticks and custom USB memory sticks is all a bit of a mystery. To help you understand what they are and how to go about ordering them here’s our top 10 tips:

Understand what a customised memory stick is. They should not be confused with standard “factory owned” designs that simply have your brand or logo printed onto them. A custom USB Memory stick is manufactured specifically for you and you will “own” the finished design. Typically custom USB memory sticks are manufactured in a 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional shapes to represent your brand, product or in a shape that works with your advertising and marketing campaign. Pretty much anything can be manufactured so don’t be afraid to ask for what might seem impossible. Custom sticks in the shape of bottles, cans, fruits, cars, forklifts, footballs, baseballs, cartoon characters, badges, poker chips, bullets and even tampons have been manufactured. Choose your material – Custom USB Memory sticks can be manufactured from a range of materials including but not limited to plastic, PVC, ABS, Silicon, PET, rubber, wood, leather and metal. If in any doubt ask your supplier and get some samples so you can feel/see how the material influences the finished product. Be aware that for some intricate designs the factories may not be able to manufacture them in all of the materials available. Be clear in your brief to your supplier. Most good suppliers will have their own in-house design team and be able to work up concepts and ideas for you and they should be willing to do this free of charge. The requirement on you is to articulate what you want, how its going to be used and to provide some context. If your supplier is expecting you to deliver a finished design and drawing for the factory to work from then they are probably best avoided. There are experts in the field of custom USB memory sticks so work with one of these. Allow sufficient time. Ideally your supplier is going to need around 4 weeks to deliver your custom USB memory sticks so factor this into your project plan. This time allows for the development of the concept, the completion of design drawings and mocks ups for approval, a physical sample, modifications and the final delivery. Insist on a physical sample. Whilst photographs from the factory of the manufactured custom sticks are “ok” they are no substitute for seeing and handling the real thing. Your supplier should also be keen to do this for you, as they will want you to approve the production against a real sample. Make sure the right grade of flash memory is being used. Grade A memory chips are new and give you access to the full amount of advertised memory on the Chip. All other grades of memory chip make less of the advertised memory available for use and in some cases are re-cycled. In other words they are memory chips taken out of used kit or recovered from USB sticks that have failed the build QA process. If you end up with anything other than Grade A memory chips you are likely to experience a higher failure rate, you won’t be able to store as much information on the stick as expected and its possible you’ll overpay for what you’re getting. Always check with your supplier that they are using Grade A memory chips.  Choose the right memory capacity for your project. There’s no point going to all the trouble of getting your own custom USB memory sticks designed and manufactured and then skimping on the memory. Typical memory sizes used today are 1GB but there is a trend towards 2GB as the price differential between the two capacities drops. RoHS Compliance – although the memory sticks are being manufactured for you and not for general sale they still need to be RoHS compliant. RoHS stands for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances and it applies to thousands of electrical and computer parts and components imported into the EU. This is EU Legislation and you must comply with it. Finding out you have imported non-RoHS compliant products and then pushing the blame back to your supplier won’t wash. The fines are significant so ensure you ask the right questions and get copies of RoHS certificates. Choose the right supplier/partner. Lots of companies offer standard printed and promotional USB memory sticks but far fewer have any experience in the delivery of custom USB memory sticks. If in any doubt ask for references, get samples and read up on any cases studies. A custom USB memory stick requires time, energy and money so don’t waste any of these valuable resources.

Branded USB Memory Sticks The Preferred Choice Of Photographers

One of the biggest changes to the photography industry over the last few years has been the move away from film to digital photography. A market that was up until a few years ago almost exclusively film based is now almost exclusively digital based.

Most professional photographers and “snappers” alike will today use digital cameras or mobile phones to take their images and once taken the images are easy to store, enhance, share and it’s easy to produce print from them. For many the real joy of and benefit of digital photography is the ability to share their photo’s with family and friends by uploading them onto sites like Flickr and Facebook.

The immediacy of digital photography and the ability to take literally thousands of images for barely any incremental cost has turned us all into a nation of “snappers” and “posters” but when it comes to photo’s of that “special event”, family portrait or portfolio photo’s then we still, in the main, turn to Professional Photographers. The ability to take “fun” and personal “snapshots” is within the grasp of all of us but photography, good photography is still an art and a profession that by definition is best left to the professionals.

Growing number of Professional photographers now not only supply their clients with hard copy prints of their photographs but they also supply them with a whole collection or portfolio of shots on some form of digital medium. For the last couple of years the digital medium of choice has been a CD or DVD because these carry large amounts of data (photo’s) and they do so relatively cheaply. The downside of CD’s and DVD’s is that they are not really considered a great “keepsake” and they do little to promote the Photographer’s business or create any form of recall –in short they do the job but they are just not great adverts for the Photographer’s business.

With the continued fall in the price of USB memory sticks allied to their proven use as a promotional product more and more Professional Photographers are now starting to use them to hand out to their client. The client’s photographs are pre-loaded on the USB memory stick and the USB memory stick is branded (printed) to carry the logo, contact details and typically the web address of the photographer.

Branded USB memory sticks unlike CD’s or DVD’s have great perceived value, they enhance the service offering from the photographer and they more importantly work as an on-going sales “billboard” which in turn should generate more business for the photographer.

Just as we’ve seen a significant shift in way in which we all take photographs its likely that we’re on the cusp of a change in the way in which professional photographers supply their images to their clients
